Nosara is a useful place to plan by interest and area rather than by a single list. Guiones, Pelada, Playa Nosara, Garza, inland communities and Ostional have different access and beach settings.
Who it suits
This guide suits first-time visitors, surfers, families, wellness travelers, birders and people building a beach-and-nature itinerary. Choose fewer activities with realistic road time rather than treating every beach as next door.
Surfing and beaches
Guiones has white sand, few stones and a surf setting. Pelada has white sand, rocks and stronger waves. Garza is stony with moderate waves. Playa Nosara has a long shoreline, sandbars and rocky reefs and suits intermediate and experienced surfers. Use Surfing to plan lessons.
Community trails and nature
The Nosara Civic Association says the community has more than twelve kilometers of public trails with marked access points and daylight use. Stay on marked trails, keep noise low, respect private boundaries, leave nature undisturbed and pack out waste. Read the current trail notice before walking.
The Nosara Civic Association says voluntary conservation agreements support a community wildlife corridor. Watch quietly, and do not feed or approach wildlife.
Ostional and turtle observation
Ostional, Nosara, Pelada and Guiones sit inside the refuge, which protects olive ridley nesting habitat. During nesting season, SINAC requires an accredited local guide on the beach. An entry fee applies; confirm it with the refuge. ADIO, the University of Costa Rica and refuge administration announce observation times, and groups are kept small. Ask them about the current arrangements before going.
SINAC prohibits motorized vehicles and horse tours on the sand, plus pets, litter, fires and nighttime flash. Keep those rules in mind on every refuge beach.
Before going, ask the refuge or ADIO about the announced time, guide contact and meeting point. Avoid flash and follow the guide’s directions about light.

Choosing activities by area
Keep water-based plans near the beach where you are staying. Guiones works for a surf lesson or beach block; Pelada adds rocks, stronger waves, snorkeling and hiking; Garza adds a stony shore, mangrove setting and fishing-village context. Playa Nosara adds sandbars, rocky reefs and a river mouth. A short map distance can still become a longer road day in rain.
For a nature day, use the marked community trails in daylight and leave quiet space for wildlife. For an Ostional plan, start with the refuge and ADIO announcement rather than building the day around a predicted arrival.
Outdoor planning
Beach walks, surf sessions, trails, wildlife observation and coastal stops fit into a trip. Roads near Ostional cross rivers that can rise in the rainy season; MOPT’s October 2024 bridge news is dated, so ask about the route before driving.
Nearby stays
Guiones supports surf planning; Pelada offers a different beach setting; inland Nosara can suit retreat schedules; Garza and Ostional require a wider road plan. Compare exact location, amenities, traveler fit and beach access in Where to stay.
Practical notes
Ask whether any activity includes transport, equipment, entry or a guide. Do not infer those details from a category label. Carry water and sun protection, follow refuge or trail rules, and check the weather and road before a cross-area day.
Building a balanced day
A practical activity day can start with one beach or trail, include a long rest period and finish near the base. Avoid planning Guiones, Pelada, Garza and Ostional as if they were one walkable district. Send the exact stay location to any confirmed operator and ask whether transport is included.
Wildlife without promises
Wildlife is part of the landscape, but sightings are not guaranteed. Monkeys, birds, reptiles and other native animals use the corridor. Watch quietly, keep noise low, do not feed animals or approach nests, and avoid camera flash at night.
Booking and confirmation
For any activity, ask about location, duration, inclusions, meeting point, age rules and cancellation terms before booking.
