Playa Guiones: Beach and Area Guide

Playa Guiones is a broad, white-sand surf beach with few stones. A gravel approach reaches the beach, and the exact path depends on where you stay. It suits travelers who want lessons, independent surf, beach walks or a beach-centered base.

Beach, community and visitor experience

The beach: Its shoreline has a steady surf setting and room for walks. Guiones sits inside the Ostional National Wildlife Refuge, so beach time comes with wildlife rules.

The community: The surrounding Guiones area is a visitor and surf base within the larger Nosara district. Services and roads vary across the area, so choose the map point carefully.

The visitor experience: Plan for surf, beach walks and classes, with a flexible schedule. Even on a lively beach day, follow the refuge rules. The Nosara Civic Association’s August 2026 statement says surfing remains permitted in Guiones and Pelada when refuge rules are followed.

Who it suits

Guiones suits beginners planning a lesson, experienced surfers, families who want a beach base, couples combining surf and classes, and wellness travelers. It is not a compact walk-everywhere town, so choose your stay around the beach access you want.

Access

Reach Guiones by road from LIR, SJO or NOB. From Liberia (LIR), shuttle companies list about three hours by shared shuttle and roughly two and a half to three and a half hours by private transfer. SANSA’s current Nosara page lists daily flights to Nosara Airport (NOB); confirm dates, baggage and the final local connection directly.

The route from the Nicoya and Sámara direction reaches this coast. Local roads can change with rain. Ask the stay whether the final approach is paved, gravel or steep, and whether a transfer can reach the entrance.

Nearby stays

Compare each stay by location, amenities, traveler fit, beach access and final-road conditions. Ask about board storage, kitchen access, shade, quiet hours, parking and a route after dark.

Activities

Surf lessons, board rental and camps fit a Guiones day.

Add yoga or a daylight trail walk, and leave one flexible block for weather.

Practical notes

SINAC says no vehicles or horses belong on the protected beach, and no pets, litter, fires or nighttime flash are allowed. Follow the refuge’s current instructions.

Bring water and sun protection. Ask an instructor about the day’s conditions before entering the water, especially if you are learning.

A good Guiones day can stay simple: choose one water plan, leave time for a beach walk, and keep the afternoon open for a class or rest. If your stay is inland, allow for the road both ways. If it is near the beach, ask about the path, shade and board storage before you arrive.

For a lesson, agree on the meeting point before leaving your stay and ask what happens if conditions change. For independent surf, keep the access path clear and give other water users room. A beach walk, class or rest block makes a useful alternative when the water plan does not suit the day.
