Nosara has several arrival patterns: road from Liberia Airport, road from San José, or a domestic flight from SJO to Nosara Airport. The right choice depends on your international flight, exact stay, luggage, surf equipment and tolerance for a long road day.
Reviewed October 2026.
From Liberia Airport (LIR)
Guanacaste Airport’s official site identifies Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport as LIR and lists ground transportation as an airport service category.
Tropical Tours publishes a shared LIR–Nosara service with an estimated three-hour trip and provider-specific departure times. Costa Rica Shuttles publishes about two and a half to three and a half hours for private transport from LIR, depending on weather, roads and the exact destination. These are published provider ranges, not a promise for every beach or accommodation.
Ask any confirmed provider about the final road, surfboards, child seats, late arrivals and the full map location. Do not use a hotel or town name alone if the stay is on a rural road.

SANSA’s current Nosara page lists daily flights to Nosara Airport (NOB); confirm dates, baggage and the final local connection directly.
By road, Costa Rica Shuttles publishes about five to six hours from the SJO/Alajuela area. That is a planning range: traffic, pickup order, weather and the final road can change the day.
From Nosara Airport (NOB)
NOB is not the doorstep of every beach-area stay. Confirm local pickup before flying and ask how surfboards, children’s equipment and late arrivals are handled. SANSA’s route information confirms the SJO–NOB link; it does not replace the final ground-transfer plan.
Road 160 and the Ostional River
MOPT reported on 22 October 2024 that a modular Acrow bridge had been launched over the Ostional River on Route 160. The release said the structure and drainage system were expected to enter service in December 2024, while complementary works continued. It also described the river as a place where rising water had prevented passage during the rainy season.
That is a dated project report. Ask the stay about the road before choosing a coastal route.
Choosing road or flight
Choose a road transfer when your group needs direct accommodation access, has substantial luggage or wants to avoid an airport connection. Choose the domestic flight when the schedule, baggage rules and local transfer work for the exact stay. Compare total door-to-door time, not only flight time.
Cars and public transport
Ask the accommodation about the final road and vehicle clearance before arranging a car.
Public transport requires current schedule checking and may require connections. Do not build a timed airport arrival around an old bus timetable.
What to send a provider
Send the airport, airline, flight number, date, passenger count, luggage, surfboards, child-seat needs, full accommodation name and map location. Ask where the vehicle meets you, whether the provider enters the final road and what happens if the flight is delayed.
Nearby areas
Guiones, Pelada, Playa Nosara, Garza and Ostional are distinct area labels. Read Where to stay and the beach guides before confirming the final destination.
LIR arrival questions
The official Guanacaste Airport site lists ground transportation among airport services. Before selecting a road option, confirm whether the provider meets inside or outside the terminal, what happens after a delay, and whether the vehicle can reach the final road.
Tropical Tours’ three-hour estimate and Costa Rica Shuttles’ private range belong to those operators. Treat them as planning ranges, not door-to-door promises.
SJO choices
The road option from SJO/Alajuela is a long travel day in the current route guide. The SANSA option is a flight to NOB, not a door-to-door transfer. Add time for airport processes, baggage limits, weather and the final road.
Coastal approach and rainy season
The coastal routes run from San José through Nicoya and Sámara, or from LIR through Santa Cruz and northern coastal communities. A 4x4 may be needed for the final approach, and buses can face rainy-season limits. Ask about current road conditions before setting out.
MOPT’s 22 October 2024 release says the modular Ostional River bridge was launched on Route 160 and that rising water had blocked passage before the project. Ask for a current MOPT/CONAVI update before publication.
Arrival by area
Give the provider one of these exact destinations: Playa Guiones, Playa Pelada, Playa Nosara, Garza, Ostional or an inland map location. Ask about the final road, parking, unloading, daylight and the walking distance from the vehicle. A route to a beach community is not automatically a route to a rural villa.
Questions to ask before booking
Ask for the departure point, travel-time range, luggage policy, surfboard policy, child-seat plan, weather policy, flight-delay policy, final-road clearance and cancellation terms. Keep those answers with the booking confirmation.
