Playa Nosara: Beach and Area Guide

Playa Nosara lies north of Pelada. It is a long beach with shallow sandbars and rocky reefs. It stretches toward Punta Nosara and ends at the mouth of the Río Boca Nosara. It suits intermediate and experienced surfers and travelers who want a less standardized beach-and-river outing.

Beach, community and visitor experience

The beach: The beach has shallow sandbars and rocky reefs. It ends at the Río Boca Nosara, so access and water conditions differ from Guiones. The surf setting suits intermediate and experienced surfers; beginners should use qualified instruction.

The community: “Playa Nosara” and “Nosara” are used in travel listings for a wider group of communities. The exact accommodation and road still matter. The official SINAC refuge page includes Playa Nosara within the Ostional refuge, alongside Ostional, Pelada and Guiones.

The visitor experience: This beach suits a less standardized coast day, an experienced-surf plan or a wider nature route. Keep the schedule flexible and ask your host about the access point before setting out.

Who it suits

It suits experienced surfers, photographers and travelers building a beach-and-river day. Families and beginner swimmers should ask locally about the water before entering.

Access

Use the complete stay address for a transfer. Providers publish about three hours for one LIR shuttle service and about two and a half to three and a half hours for private LIR transport. From SJO, SANSA’s current Nosara page lists daily flights to Nosara Airport (NOB); confirm dates, baggage and the final local connection directly.

Roads toward Ostional cross rivers that can rise in the wet season. MOPT reported in October 2024 that a modular bridge on Route 160 had been launched and was expected to enter service in December 2024. Ask about current conditions before driving.

Nearby stays

Compare coastal lodging, guesthouses, rentals and inland accommodation by location, amenities, traveler suitability, beach access and final-road condition. Ask about food, water, shade, parking and whether a vehicle can reach the door after rain.

Activities

Plan beach time, experienced-surf sessions, wildlife-aware walks and a wider coast route. SINAC prohibits vehicles and horses on protected sand, along with pets, litter, fires and nighttime flash.

Practical notes

Carry water and sun protection. Ask locally about the river mouth, sandbars, rocks, currents and access. Keep pets and vehicles off protected beach areas.

Give Playa Nosara its own block in the day. The river mouth, sandbars and rocky reefs make a different outing from Guiones, and the return route deserves time. It can fit a wider coast plan, but a flexible schedule leaves room for weather and the road home.

The river-mouth setting makes this its own outing. Ask a local instructor or host about the shoreline, sandbars, rocks, water entry and return route. Keep children with a responsible adult.

Ostional and turtle observation

If turtle observation is part of the plan, ask the refuge or ADIO about the current time and guide arrangements. SINAC requires an accredited local guide during nesting season and prohibits vehicles, horses on sand, pets, litter, fires and nighttime flash.
